Zuber Cemetery: The Living History of a Black Cemetery

The presentation will document efforts to save and restore Zuber Cemetery in Shannon, Georgia, which was established in 1903 by the African American families of Zuber, Dozier, Bell and Watters. The nearly abandoned three-acre burial site was used as early as 1847 as a slave burial ground. We will explore history relevant to Zuber Cemetery, but also to slave burial grounds historically and share how they serve as an historical archive that can contribute to the development and a better understanding of the complex narrative of slavery in America.
