Transits of Mercury: Past and (Very Near) Future

Dr. Todd Timberlake will discuss transits of Mercury (when Mercury passes across the face of the Sun as seen from Earth) in advance of the upcoming transit on November 11, 2019. He will explain why transits occur at all and why they occur infrequently. He will also discuss historical observations of Mercury transits and what to expect from the transit in November (for which he will host a viewing event on
campus). After the talk, Dr. Timberlake will give a quick tour of the new display on transits in the Dewey and Irene Large Science Museum adjacent to the McAllister auditorium. This lecture will be for a general audience and will help audience members understand and better appreciate the importance of transit observations (and hopefully inspire them to come see the transit for themselves on November 11).
