The Role of Prescribed Fire in Southeastern Forest Management
Katie Owens, Upper Coosa River Program Director at The Nature Conservancy (TNC), and Noah Howie, EVS Senior, will discuss the role that prescribed fire plays in managing forests in Georgia. Fire has historically been an important disturbance and regulatory mechanism in eastern forests. With most natural fires suppressed, forest managers are turning to prescribed burns to replace natural fires. While this make sense ecologically, fire is often portrayed negatively in the media and education the public on the importance and utility of fire is critical. Noah will also briefly share his experiences working as an intern this semester on a TNC fire crew. One goal of this presentation is to raise awareness of the ESS Department’s new partnership with the TNC that will allow students to participate in a semester-long internship through TNC where they get experience as part of a controlled burn team.
