Berry College Opera presents Stephen Sondheim's classic, Sweeney Todd
About this Event
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street follows Benjamin Barker — a barber unjustly imprisoned by the lecherous Judge Turpin — who returns to London as Sweeney Todd, bent on revenge. Reopening his barbershop above Mrs. Lovett’s failing pie shop, Todd begins a murderous rampage, slitting the throats of his customers. Mrs. Lovett, ever resourceful, bakes the bodies into her suddenly popular meat pies. As Todd’s thirst for vengeance grows, the plot spirals into a dark tale of obsession, murder, and the quest for justice, leading to a blood-soaked, tragic climax.
Berry College Opera’s production of Sweeney Todd brings Stephen Sondheim’s powerful story to life in a way that highlights its relevance today. With its themes of justice, revenge, and moral conflict, the production invites the audience to reflect on these issues while enjoying the artistry of talented student performers. Through creative staging and a focus on clear storytelling, this performance aims to connect with audiences both emotionally and thoughtfully. A provided program with director notes and the opportunity to talk with the performers after the production will only enhance this experience for everyone involved.
