Stephen Watson-Dust Ye Shall Be, solo exhibition
Dust Ye Shall Be is a temporary installation of complex
geometric designs created with different spices arranged
on the floor. The exhibition creates a unique sensory
experience through the repetition of similar elements in new
combinations. At their core, the spice paintings reveal the
presence of the maker, are vulnerable to change, and are
ultimately disposable. The temporal result is born of intensive
labor while representing an attitude of devotion and faith.
Stephen Watson has a Master of Fine Arts in studio
art from the University of Alabama (Tuscaloosa) and
Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art and minor in Christian
ministries from Williams Baptist College in Walnut Ridge,
Ark. He exhibits his work in a range of venues including
public art displays and temporary art installations for
non-gallery spaces, including churches. Recent solo
exhibitions include Over and Over, Again at Roundhouse
Gallery in Jacksonville State University, Jacksonville, Ala.;
Nearly Nothing at The Museum of Art at Pittsburgh State
University in Pittsburgh, Kan.; and Patterns of Devotion,
Barrington Center for the Arts at Gordon College in
Boston. Watson is an associate professor in the School of
the Arts at Samford University in Birmingham, Ala.
