Ridicule (1996) is a French film set in late-seventeenth century France, specifically at and around the French court at Versailles. It develops themes of power, the nature of the centralized French monarchy (l'etat, c'est moi), and Enlightenment ideas about rational thinking, human development, gender relations, and science. It is also highly entertaining. It is a piece of historical fiction, using the court setting to tell a story of aristocrats and others jockeying for influence with the king.
