“Office Space” (1999) is a comedic film satirizing American corporate culture. Set in Austin, TX in the late 1990s, the film follows Peter Gibbons, a programmer at the software company Initech, as he navigates the challenges of working for a soulless corporation. After a hypnotherapy session leaves him in a perpetual state of calm, Peter refuses to comply with office norms and unintentionally receives an offer to be promoted to management. Peter and his coworkers engage in a failed attempt to seek revenge on Initech before Peter realizes he needs to change career paths and seek a position that’s more meaningful. Initially a box-office flop, “Office Space” became a cult classic after the film was broadcast on cable. Journalists have hailed its representation of workplace misery as a modern-day companion to Melville and Kafka, and “Office Space” has influenced subsequent media representations of corporate culture like Apple TV+’s popular series “Severance.”
