"In the Shadow of Lavender Mountain" by Dan Roper, editor, Georgia Backroads magazine
Before the founding of Berry College, and before the first Mountain Day was ever celebrated, the countryside north of Rome was home to many people. Some of these were farmers who led simple lives. Some were teachers, preachers, and millers who served their communities. And some were leaders who played key roles in our nation’s greatest events. And always, as a backdrop, there were flatwoods and the mountain, hosting the region’s remarkable natural history.
Meet Dan Roper
Dan Roper is the editor and publisher of Georgia Backroads magazine. Since coming to Rome in 1986, he has taught in several capacities at Berry College. He claims to have raised his children on campus, as he and his wife Lisa spent so much time with them there! Dan practiced law in Rome from 1986 to 2005, before stepping in as publisher of the magazine, and we are honored to have him lead this free Facebook Live lecture to help celebrate Mountain Day!
