Addiction and Virtue: Lumen Lecture with Dr. Kent Dunnington
Dr. Kent Dunnington brings together philosophy, psychology, and theology in his work on Addiction and Virtue. Dr. Dunnington will discuss what addictions are, and how we can break the power of harmful vices. He argues for a model of change that resembles that of Alcoholics Anonymous – one that aims to transcend the models of illness and sin. That is to say, Dunnington rejects the idea that addictions are merely matters of mental illness or sin. Thus, their remedies must go beyond simply medication or confession & repentance. Virtue Ethics plays a major role in his thought.
