Forces of Migration: Exploring the Push and Pull Factors Shaping U.S. Immigration Today
About this Event
Dr. Samantha Call and Dr. Vincent Gawronski specialize in European Politics and Latin American politics respectively. They are both professors in the political science department. The nature of their lecture will be analyzing our country’s current immigration patterns to understand what is shaping the increase or decrease in migration to the United States from these regions. Dr. Call will be discussing current world conflicts and economic factors influencing migration into the United States. She will also discuss migration forces from European countries. Dr. Gawronski will explain and use a DCVM system (disaster, crime, violence measurement) to describe what is increasing or pushing migrants to come into the United States. The purpose of this lecture is to inform students on the world around them, not only in the U.S. but what is happening globally. Immigration has become a very important topic many students care about across disciplines and in our politics today, shaping the communities around us. This is appealing to students because it provides a deeper understanding of how global events and political dynamics affect our local and national communities. This lecture appeals to a general audience because immigration is a universal and timely issue that intersects with economics, politics, and culture. These topics influence everyone in some way. By exploring both European and Latin American migration trends, the lecture allows students from any background or major to engage with real-world issues that connect to their daily lives and academic interests. This lecture also embodies Phi Kappa Phi’s mission to promote the love of learning by encouraging students to think critically about a major global issue (immigration) from different perspectives. It invites students to explore how movement across borders shapes societies, economies, and cultures, helping them connect academic study to real-world challenges.
