Conson Wilson Lecture

Ishmael Beah has authored the bestselling memoir, A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier (2007), in which he writes about his experience as a child soldier in Sierra Leone and his journey toward forgiveness and healing after his rescue by UNICEF. Beah has also authored two novels, Radiance of Tomorrow (2014) and Little Family (2020), as well as numerous publications in The New York Times, TIME, and The Guardian.

The Conson C. Wilson Lectureship brings speakers of national and international note to Berry’s campus. This lecture is the culmination of the year’s First-Year Reading Experience. Ishmael Beah has been selected for his authored publications, which include his short story, “Unusual Normality,” in the First-Year Reading Experience book selection. In this short story, Beah describes making friends in school and being invited to a game of paintball, in which he performs unusually well.
