The tour of Oak Hill home and gardens, lasting approximately 1 hour, moves through the residence of Martha Berry and focuses on how she transformed her childhood home into a space that would support and showcase the students of Berry. You will learn the histories and stories of influential friends and benefactors of the schools all while seeing Berry’s home and belongings much as she left them in the early 1940s. These spaces and objects offer a glimpse of the early days of Berry connecting you to your rich heritage.

Mar 16, 2026: From Berry Busy to Purposeful: Choosing What Matters Over What’s Next at Krannert Ballroom

Dr. Kendall Cotton Bronk is the Principal Investigator for the Adolescent Moral Development Lab and a Professor of Psychology in the Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences at the Claremont Graduate University. She is a developmental psychologist interested in understanding and supporting the positive development and moral growth of young people. We have invited Dr Bronk to Berry to give a campus-wide lecture that aims to provide guidance to students who feel “Berry Busy” but not particularly purposeful. This talk would focus on (1) the importance of first figuring out what matters most and (2) then engaging in reflection on the extent to which daily activities align with those purposeful aims. Her research suggests that we don’t “find” purpose. It’s not waiting under a rock, just waiting to be revealed. Instead, we cultivate it through a process of exploration, trial and error, and— importantly— reflection. We need to pause to reflect on the activities we engage in. We should ask ourselves, how did that go? What did I like about that activity? What didn’t feel right, and how did that activity align with what I’m hoping to accomplish in my life?

He came to work for Martha Berry as the principal of the Boy's Industrial School in 1920, and became Berry College's first president when college classes were added to the Berry Schools in 1926. After his retirement, the Recitation Hall was renamed the Green Building in his honor.

Stories of Repair is a documentary film series curated by Dr. Margaret Ndwandwe and Dr. Brian Campbell, featuring their recent works on restorative justice, memory, and community healing. Across four films, Restoring Rose Hill and Seeing the South (Ndwandwe) and Her Name Was Hester and Let Us Tell Our Story (Campbell), the series examines how documentary storytelling can confront historical harm, amplify marginalized community voices, and imagine paths toward restorative justice and repair. Each screening will be followed by a dialogue with the filmmaker and invited guests, allowing audiences into an ongoing conversation about justice, truth-telling, and transformation through the lens of filmmaking. Seeing the South: Racism, Reclamation, and Memory-Making in the Upstate is a documentary that examines how residents of Union County, South Carolina, grapple with the region’s racial history and the legacies of slavery, Jim Crow, and institutionalized racism. The film pairs community conversations with visual storytelling to explore how people remember the past and imagine a more just future. It highlights both the beauty and the tensions that shape Southern life, offering a portrait of a community wrestling with its history and working toward repair.

The purpose of this event is to showcase traditional musical folk dances from six different cultures outside the United States, and in addition to becoming more mindful of foreign cultures, participants should walk away with a deeper understanding of how music, movement, and culture are intertwined. By learning these dances, the event attendees would not only expand their general knowledge of the music of other cultures, but they would strengthen their own ability to personally express themselves through music and their understanding of how that expression connects them with other people. Rather than the attendees merely observing the performance of these dances, they will be actively participating and learning the dances, which will build their musical repertoire and give our presenting future music educators valuable teaching experience.

In honor of the Alumni Council’s Annual Berry History Week, Oak Hill & The Martha Berry Museums is pleased to invite the campus community and the public to a special opportunity to visit the House O’ Dreams, one of Berry College’s most meaningful and beloved historic sites.

On March 28, 2026, guests may travel to House O’ Dreams via a dedicated shuttle departing from Berry College’s Mountain Campus. Docents will be on site throughout the day to provide historical context and interpretation. Visitors may also choose to hike up the mountain independently and participate at no cost.

Ticket Information
• $12 per person (public)
• $8 per person (Berry College students, faculty, staff, & alumni)
• Shuttle tickets include round-trip transportation and docent-led historical interpretation
• Tickets available online at the link above.

Shuttles will depart from Berry College’s Mountain Campus every 45 minutes beginning at 10:00 a.m., with the last shuttle departing at 2:30 p.m. Details as to where to park and meet the shuttle will be provided via email to registrants prior to the event.

Important Visitor Information
• No dogs are permitted on the shuttle or inside the House O’ Dreams building
• Open food and drink are not allowed on the shuttle or inside the house
• House O’ Dreams has limited accessibility; visitors with accessibility questions are encouraged to contact the museum in advance for assistance

Apr 2, 2026: George Scholars Lecture Series Presentation - Dr. Nicholas Gaspelin - Understanding How the Attentional System Learns to Suppress Distractions at Krannert Ballroom C

"Understanding How the Attentional System Learns to Suppress Distractions" How do we stay focused in a world filled with distractions designed to grab our attention? In attention research, there has been a forty-year debate about whether salient stimuli have an automatic ability to distract us. For example, in applied settings, we often assume that salient signals such as a brightly colored advertisements or flashy cues will capture attention. However, we also must learn to ignore salient signals in order to focus on relevant information and accomplish our immediate goals. In this presentation, Dr. Gaspelin will present a theory of attention that explains how we learn to ignore distractions called the signal suppression hypothesis. According to this theory, salient stimuli do generate an “attend-tome” signal that competes for attention; but salient stimuli can be inhibited to prevent distraction from occurring. The presentation will review converging evidence for this theory from human behavior, eye movements, and brainwaves measured via EEG. Dr. Gaspelin will also discuss recent evidence that an initial instance of distraction will ironically serve as a learning signal that strengthens future suppression. Ultimately, this theory provides a unified account of how the attentional system balances automatic capture and learned control. This lecture will share some of Dr. Gaspelin's research on stimuli saliency and how it affects how individuals perceive and suppress it in the context of their day to day experiences. Concepts and principles in the area of cognitive psychology applicable to a wide range of people and value systems—will also be shared.

Join us for a special Family Morning at the museum designed especially for our youngest visitors! In celebration of Berry College’s Annual day of Giving, this month’s theme is Generosity. Families are invited to explore hands-on activities that highlight the generosity of individuals who helped shape the history of The Martha Berry Museum and the Berry Schools.

Guests can:

Write a thank-you note like Martha Berry and mail it onsite through our museum “post office.”

Create paintings inspired by Mary Reynolds Morton, a major donor who helped fund the museum.

Learn how The Old Mill works through a STEM activity inspired by Henry Ford’s support of its construction.

Guests may also enjoy a tour of the Oak Hill home designed specifically for young learners. Tours begin at 10:00am, 11:00am, and 12:00pm and are recommended for ages 6–12, though all are welcome. For tour pricing and reservation information, please visit the link above.

The documentary tells the story of Dr. Paul Framer, Ophelia Dahl, and Dr. Jim Yong Kim who started a global movement to change global healthcare and helped bring about the notion that healthcare is a human right. Starting as college students the group came
together in a squatter settlement in Haiti which at the time was ravaged by diseases like tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS. They were determined to provide the same level of healthcare we would expect here in the United States and had to overcome many obstacles to
do so. They were the first to deliver a high level of care to rural Haiti that many thought impossible fighting not only the poor living conditions, lack of supplies, and lack of money but also many people in the United States who believed we should not waste resources on other countries. As their system proved to work they soon expanded building health care infrastructure in many other countries such as Rwanda. Eventually building the organization Partner in Health.

Stories of Repair is a documentary film series curated by Dr. Margaret Ndwandwe and Dr. Brian Campbell, featuring their recent works on restorative justice, memory, and community healing. Across four films, Restoring Rose Hill and Seeing the South (Ndwandwe) and Her Name Was Hester and Let Us Tell Our Story (Campbell), the series examines how documentary storytelling can confront historical harm, amplify marginalized community voices, and imagine paths toward restorative justice and repair. Each screening will be followed by a dialogue with the filmmaker and invited guests, allowing audiences into an ongoing conversation about justice, truth-telling, and transformation through the lens of filmmaking. Let Us Tell Our Story: Black Resilience in Northwest Georgia is a documentary that explores the history, strength, and lived experiences of Black communities in the region. Created as a follow-up to Her Name Was Hester, the film responds to viewers’ requests for broader historical context by centering the voices of local Black residents, educators, and faith leaders. Through personal stories, interviews, and community conversations, the documentary sheds light on the challenges and triumphs that have shaped Black life in Northwest Georgia. It highlights how education, faith, and communal care sustain resilience across generations and opens a wider dialogue about race, history, and reconciliation in the region.

This lecture explores the internal transitions that often accompany the shift from college life into adulthood, particularly the loss of structure, identity, and external direction that many students experience after graduation. Drawing from his experience as a former Berry College student-athlete, his years navigating post-college disorientation, and his five-month thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail, Miller Hollstein reflects on how periods of confusion and uncertainty are not failures to fix, but invitations to listen more closely to one’s inner direction. The talk emphasizes presence, attention, and self-reflection as tools for navigating identity transitions, rather than relying solely on external markers of success. Designed for a general audience, the presentation encourages students to reconsider how meaning, values, and direction emerge through lived experience, especially during times of change. Dr. Brian Campbell will participate in a formal discussion after the lecture about the cross-cultural role of experience with the natural world in providing reflective opportunities and guidance in humans’ self-exploration and self-discovery. After this formal discussion between Mr. Hollstein and Dr. Campbell, Dr. Campbell will conduct a formal question and answer section with the audience, hoping to engage Berry College students and student-athletes in their own reflective considerations of their time after Berry.

Apr 24, 2026: Spring Into Dance Presented by Berry College Dance Company at Sisters Theatre

Spring Into Dance will present a wide variety of dance styles to audience members. Choreography is created by two faculty as well as students who previously completed the DAN 307 Choreography course. This performance allows students to experience concert dance in a live venue on campus and view a wide array of artistic styles and communication through the art of dance. A director's note by artistic director Professor Pecina will introduce the audience to the specific dance setting and provide guidance for interpreting artistic statements made through movement.

Come enjoy the Oak Hill estate grounds and gardens while preparing for finals on Reading Day - the grounds will be open to all students from 10 AM – 2 PM on Wednesday, April 29th. The Swift & Finch Coffee Van will be parked outside to serve coffee and other beverages throughout the event!

There is limited internet access on the Oak Hill grounds, so please be prepared to use a hotspot if you require internet. We recommend bringing a towel or blanket to sit on just in case the grass is wet! No hammocks are permitted. In the event of rain, interior spaces around the Oak Hill estate will be opened up for student use.

Need a study break and a CE Credit? Tours of the Oak Hill home will be available on the hour from 10 AM – 3 PM on Reading Day, and throughout finals! You can reserve tickets here: https://berry.ticketspice.com/oak-hill-tours
